Visit Billund and Legoland In A Denmark Forest - Part 1 of 2
Today we are doing something a little different. We found a secluded glen that is a whole town. This Secluded Glen choice is ideal for young families.
Situated in the main Jutland peninsula of Denmark, in the middle of an evergreen forest is the town of Billund.
You are miles from any major city.
Billund is a small town that revolves around Lego. From the time you land at its small airport, you feel like you are enchanted glen in the middle of a huge forest. What's amazing is you can still do this in a modern day developed country.
The town is closed during the winter.
There are three ways to get to Billund. This easiest is to fly from Copenhagen. You can also fly in from London, Berlin, and Oslo. The airport is a small and great looking airport, very clean and efficient. Most of the planes flying in are small propeller planes. When you are overhead you can see mile upon mile of forest, plains, and rivers. When you near Billund and descend, you see a small town in the middle.
You can drive to Billund with a rental car. Fly into Copenhagen and drive west through the nice coniferous forest. Stop by various charming towns on your way in. You can also take a bus that goes to Billund. We recommend stop by Vejle on your way into Billund, its about 30 miles to the East. It's a scenic seaside town that sits at the converge of two valleys/gigantic glens. There is no train station in Billund and there is no river that runs through it.
Legoland Billund
The main attraction in Billund is the Legoland. Billund is the home of the world famous House of the Brick. The rides here are similar to other Legolands but with a few slight twists. Plus, this Legoland is so remote that it is not nearly as crowded as the other Legolands in the World. The baby rides such as the minner circular coaster has its tracts on top of curved concrete that matches the roller coaster's dips. We have never seen that before.
If you collect minifigures, the staff at the store on the westside of the park actually feels them and puts them in labeled rows behind the counter. You can ask them for the figurine you want from the current series. With the new bag format, that might not possible anymore but hopefully their figurine feeling skills are still there!
Try out Danish ice cream. They have wasp feeders all over the park as there are a lot there the summer. That is one drawback of ice cream, it attracts the wasps. They have stung people. If you get stung, which one of our party did through the side of his glasses, you can go to the first aid station, which has cactus that the workers cut off pieces for your sting. Talk about a natural solution!
What makes the Polar X-Plorer unique is at the end of the ride. Check out where you head into below. Can you guess what happens next?
The Lego House is a shrine to Lego fans around the world and it is not to be missed. Located in downtown Billund, it is only a 8 block walk away from the hotels we discuss below and 9 blocks from Legoland Billund. So yah, we prefer to walk it since it takes you through the very quiet town of Billund.
After you finish exploring Lego House, head down to the exit and get receive a packet of red lego bricks. You get your bricks in a bag with a picture of a special combination that is unique for over millions of possible configurations.
