Visit Antarctica and The Most Secluded Post Office In The Universe

Until we finally colonize and live in a place other than humanity's home cradle, there is the Penguin Post Office at Port Lockroy on the bottom side of the world.

Visiting Antarctica is likely one of the most adventurous and most secluded from major cities that a "Secluded Glender" can do in a lifetime.  If you are in good physical condition and have the financial means to do so we have one simple question. Why not?

You have one life to live.  Even after all our advancement in technology there is very little people who left Earth.  It will be many more years away before you can live outside of Earth and visit the Moon or other planets.  Until then, we have Antarctica.

And what a place Antarctica is for Secluded Glenders like yourself!

How Do You Get There?
Getting to Antarctica is the most challenging thing.  You will have to fly to Australia or South America.  If you are from the U.S. then flying to South America makes the most sense as you will not shift much time zones which is good for your circadian rhythm and internal clock.

Once you reach the Southern End of Argentina in South America you will board a cruise ship that will take you the rest of the way.  The popular choice for Antarctica cruise ships is to depart from Ushuaia, Argentina.

Warning
It is a long and cold journey.  You will be at sea for many days.  You also have to transfer flights if you are coming from America, Europe, Asia, or Africa.  You should be in decent physical condition to attempt this journey.

Mail Your Post Card From Another World
Almost all cruise ships visiting Antarctica will call upon the bay of Port Lockroy and the station there.  You will visit Penguin Post Office, a distinctive black and red rectangular building.  Its name is fitting as you will most likely see penguins meandering and waddling in the front.  Once inside, you will have an opportunity to mail a postcard at the red mailbox station.  Of course it is optional but who would want to go all that way just to decline the opportunity to mail a postcard to themselves or a loved one with the most unique from address? Yes, take the opportunity and mail a post card for sure.

You can also visit the British Operation Tabarin base established in 1944 and used in World War II.  It is also a starting point for the scientific research of Antarctica that commenced here and has now spread to other parts of the continent.

The British base is now a museum.  There is also a whaling factory.  Both the base and factory underwent renovation in 1996 and is currently administered by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

Aurora Australis
Many people in America and Europe have heard of the Northern Aurora Borealis.  Did you know there is an aurora in the Southern Hemisphere as well?  These are the Aurora Australis and they are magnificent.  Check out the image below of the Aurora with a lighted ice cap in Antartica.  These are also known as the Southern Lights.

Next see below for the Aurora Australis as it bends and curves in the Antarctic evening sky.

Things To See In The Southern Hemisphere
As you sail in the Southern Ocean you should take the opportunity to look up in the night sky and see constellations only seen in this part of the world such as the distinguished Southern Cross.  There are also many unique species of whales and seals in this part of the world.  One such species is the Southern Right Whale which can be found in the southern part of the Southern Hemisphere.  Of course, penguins can only found in the wild in the Southern Hemisphere.  The largest penguins are only found in Antarctica and that is the Emperor Penguin.

Unique Things To Do In Antarctica
There is more to do in Antarctica than to just send a postcard.  Definitely see the variety of penguins at the edge of the continent.  Also you should walk a few steps and soak in the serene nature and pristine horizon of Antarctica with its white covered terrain.

For those who can get a hold of a kayak, you can be like the person below who is not only kayaking in Antarctica but doing so at midnight!  Remember during the summer there, the sun never sets in some nights.
